Safety Concerns Linger for South Auckland Jewellery Store Owner
Months after being hospitalized in a robbery, Gurdeep Singh, the owner of Pooja Jewellers in Papatoetoe, remains concerned about safety in South Auckland. In June, Singh and his family were in their store when a group of men attempted to steal trays of jewelry. Singh intervened and was struck multiple times in the head with a hammer. His son chased the assailants away with a sword, leading to the arrest of five people, including a 16-year-old charged with aggravated robbery.
Physical and Emotional Recovery
Despite the incident, Singh expressed positivity but acknowledged ongoing physical struggles. He mentioned lingering pain and difficulty with bright lights due to his eye injury. The healing process is expected to take up to a year. Singh emphasized the importance of increased security measures in the store, including a reinforced door and extra locks. While feeling safe inside the store, he voiced concerns about potential random attacks in the area.
Collaborative Efforts for Enhanced Safety
Singh highlighted the support from police foot patrols and community patrollers, noting their positive impact on the area’s safety. Plans are underway to install additional CCTV cameras in Papatoetoe, with Singh advocating for more security personnel and longer patrols in the new year. The local retail association is working with authorities to improve security measures collectively.
Unity and Support in the Community
Following the attack, Papatoetoe retailers have united to look out for each other, fostering a supportive environment. Singh expressed gratitude for the solidarity among businesses and the sense of community care. As efforts continue to enhance safety measures, Singh remains hopeful for a safer and more secure environment for all residents and businesses in South Auckland.
