Tragic Loss of Beloved Zoo Animal in Capybara Tragedy
In a heartbreaking turn of events at Wellington Zoo, Luna, the beloved capybara, tragically lost her life following a fight within the capybara enclosure. Luna’s passing has left Dia as the sole capybara at the zoo, prompting an outpouring of grief and support from the community.
Life and Death of Luna
According to Acting Wildlife Director Nick Dunn, Luna had been battling chronic gut issues and diarrhea for several weeks. Despite receiving treatment and being in a stable condition, Luna required blood tests that necessitated her removal from the enclosure and administration of anesthesia. Sadly, upon reintroduction to the group, Luna and Dia engaged in a scuffle, resulting in fatal injuries for Luna.
Dunn explained that while capybaras are typically resilient animals, Luna’s pre-existing health condition made it impossible for her to recover from the wounds inflicted during the altercation. The zoo is awaiting blood test results to determine the exact cause of Luna’s deteriorating health.
Tribute to Luna and Support for Dia
Following Luna’s passing, Wellington Zoo has been inundated with messages of support and affection for the endearing capybara. Dunn expressed gratitude for the community’s outpouring of love, emphasizing Luna’s special place in the hearts of both keepers and visitors.
With Dia now alone, the zoo’s mammal team is providing additional care and attention to ensure her well-being. Plans are in place to introduce a male capybara, Fernando, from Brooklands Zoo to keep Dia company and potentially form a new herd. The introduction of Fernando is scheduled for the coming weeks, offering Dia companionship and a fresh start after Luna’s untimely death.
As Luna’s legacy lives on in the memories of those who cherished her, the zoo looks towards a future of healing and companionship for Dia and the new chapter she will embark on with Fernando by her side.
