The ordeal began on December 15 when Athena managed to escape from her home in Green Cove Springs, Florida, while her family was at church. Her owner, Brooke Comer, received a message from a neighbor with a photo of Athena outside the house, sparking a frantic search that lasted nearly a week.
Despite their best efforts, Comer and her family were unable to locate Athena, who seemed to be playing an elusive game of hide-and-seek. Community members and neighbors from nearby towns joined the search, sending in sightings and photos in the hopes of reuniting Athena with her family.
The search spanned nearly 32 kilometers, with Comer and her family racing to each reported sighting, only to find themselves always one step behind. The uncertainty and fear of not knowing where Athena could have gone was a constant source of worry for Comer, who described the experience as terrifying.
However, on Christmas Eve at 2:30 am, a Ring video notification from the doorbell changed everything. As Comer watched the footage, she saw Athena jumping at the door and ringing the doorbell, signaling her triumphant return. The emotional moment was made even sweeter as Athena rushed inside to reunite with her family, bringing joy and relief to all.
The community support and efforts to find Athena did not go unnoticed by Comer, who expressed gratitude for the outpouring of help during the difficult time. Plans were already in motion to ensure Athena’s well-being, including a full examination, flea and tick treatments, and getting her microchipped for added security.
