Alcohol Ban Reinstated in Renwick
After a successful trial run during the 2024 Marlborough Wine & Food Festival, an alcohol ban is set to make a return to the streets of Renwick. This decision comes after a request from the police and concerns raised by the community regarding public safety and disorderly conduct during previous events.
Solicitor Claudia Mark presented the Marlborough District Council with a renewal of its Alcohol Control Bylaw at a recent meeting. The review of the bylaw highlighted its effectiveness in addressing issues related to alcohol consumption in public places. Mark emphasized that similar bans in central Blenheim and Picton had proven successful in regulating people’s behavior and reducing incidents of crime and disorder.
Community Concerns and Potential Year-Round Restrictions
Wairau-Awatere ward councillor Scott Adams expressed awareness of the community’s concerns, particularly regarding the Renwick Domain skate park where littering and unruly behavior have been reported. This prompted discussions within the council about extending the ban permanently to Renwick, pending further conversations with the police.
While the current bylaw has a 10-year term, any modifications to include Renwick in the permanent ban would involve community consultations. In the meantime, a temporary alcohol ban will be in effect for the streets of Renwick during the upcoming 2025 Marlborough Wine & Food Festival.
Exploring Long-Term Solutions
In addition to the proposed permanent ban extension, the council is considering drafting a local alcohol policy (LAP) to address broader issues related to alcohol consumption in the region. The LAP would apply to both on-licence and off-licence premises, offering guidelines on location restrictions and other regulatory measures.
Karen Winter, council environmental health officer, highlighted recent changes to the Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act that now prevent large players from appealing LAP decisions. This could streamline the process of developing and implementing regulations to ensure public safety and well-being.
As the council continues to navigate the complexities of alcohol regulation in the region, the community’s input and concerns remain at the forefront of decision-making processes. Stay tuned for updates on the evolving alcohol policies and their impact on public events and safety in Marlborough.
With the reinstatement of the alcohol ban in Renwick, residents and visitors alike can expect a safer and more controlled environment during public gatherings and festivals. Let’s raise a toast to responsible drinking and community well-being!
