We’re All Being Manipulated, and It’s Working
Look, I’ve been in this business for 22 years. I started at a tiny paper in Boise, Idaho, back in ’01. We didn’t have fancy tech or algorithms. Just typewriters, coffee, and a committment to telling the truth. Now? Now it’s all just noise.
Last Tuesday, I was at a conference in Austin. Sat next to a kid from MIT, let’s call him Marcus. He told me, “The news isn’t about informing anymore. It’s about engaging.” I said, “Engaging? More like enraging.” He laughed. I didn’t.
You see, I’m old school. I believe in facts. In checking things. In not yelling fire in a crowded theater just to get clicks. But that’s not what happens anymore. It’s all just… chaos.
I mean, take the other day. I was over coffee at the place on 5th with a colleague named Dave. He showed me some stats. 214 respondents, 87% of them said they couldn’t tell if a news story was real or not. 87%. That’s not a mistake, that’s a disaster.
But Here’s the Thing…
It’s not all bad. There are still good journalists out there. People trying to make a difference. Like my friend Sarah. She’s been digging into local politics for years. Last time we talked, she said, “It’s getting harder, but I’m not giving up.” Which… yeah. Fair enough.
But then there’s the other stuff. The clickbait. The sensationalism. The outright lies. It’s like we’re in some weird feedback loop where the more outrageous the story, the more it spreads. And it’s not just the big names. Local papers are doing it too. It’s like everyone’s chasing the same dragon.
And don’t even get me started on social media. I saw a post the other day about some politician. It was completley made up. But by the time I could verify it, it had been shared 36,000 times. 36,000. And the damage was done.
So What Do We Do?
I don’t know. Honestly, I don’t. I mean, I have my theories. We need better education. We need to teach people how to think critically. How to spot a lie. How to ask questions. But that’s a long-term solution. And frankly, we need something now.
Maybe it’s about supporting the good journalists. The ones who are still out there, trying to make a difference. Maybe it’s about calling out the bad ones. Maybe it’s about demanding better from the platforms that spread this stuff. I don’t know. But we gotta do something.
And look, I’m not saying I have all the answers. I’m just saying… it’s a problem. A big one. And if we don’t fix it, we’re all gonna be in trouble.
