Severe Weather Alert for North Island: Thunderstorms, Heavy Rain, and Gales Expected

Scattered thunderstorms are expected about parts of the North Island on Thursday morning, with localised heavy rain and hail. MetService have issued a severe thunderstorm watch for the Coromandel Peninsula, Waikato, Waitomo, Bay of Plenty, Rotorua, as there could be downpours of between 25 and 40mm/h, or possibly even more. The rainfall of this intensity can cause surface and/or flash flooding, especially about low-lying areas such as streams, rivers, or narrow valleys, and may also lead to slips. Driving conditions will also be hazardous with surface flooding and poor visibility in heavy rain.

Preparation and Warnings

MetService said a broad area of low pressure was bringing unsettled weather to many parts of New Zealand on Boxing Day and Friday, while a low was deepening east of the North Island. Hawke’s Bay officials have been preparing for possible flooding, with the regional council calling back staff from leave after MetService issued heavy rain warnings. The team has been closely monitoring river levels and looking to potentially open minor river mouths in the area should the need arise. Rivers are expected to rise and remain within their channels, although quick rises in heavy rain are possible.

Orange Heavy Rain Warning

An orange heavy rain warning has been issued for Gisborne/Tai Rāwhiti, the Hastings District north of Napier, and the Wairoa District. In Gisborne/Tai Rāwhiti, heavy east to northeast rain was expected to set in from around 6 am, becoming south to southeast late on Boxing Day, with thunderstorms also possible. The Wairoa District is expected to receive 200 to 250 mm of rain from 10 am on Thursday until noon on Saturday, with similar heavy rain expected in the Hastings District north of Napier.

Strong Wind Watch

A strong wind watch has been issued for coastal areas of Hawke’s Bay, Gisborne/Tai Rāwhiti, Taranaki, western parts of Whanganui, and Kapiti Coast, Wellington, and coastal Marlborough, including the Sounds. Southerly winds may approach severe gale in exposed places, with a moderate chance of upgrading to a warning. Citizens are advised to stay updated with the latest information and take necessary precautions.

As the weather patterns evolve, it is crucial to stay informed and follow any official guidance provided. Stay safe and be prepared for the severe weather conditions expected in the North Island.
