Navigating through the vast world of news categories can be quite overwhelming, especially when trying to keep up with the latest updates. RNZ journalists have recently made a mark at the Voyager Media Awards, with Anusha Bradley taking home the title of reporter of the year and Dana Johannsen being named sports journalist of the year. The results of the awards were announced on Friday, where RNZ had an impressive 13 finalists.
Reporter Anusha Bradley’s work was praised for its newsworthiness, public interest journalism, engaging writing, and thorough research, which added depth and color to her pieces. On the other hand, sports correspondent Dana Johannsen was recognized for her exceptional portfolio, which showcased deep research, strong reporting principles, and a clear storytelling style that set the standard for sports journalists in New Zealand. Additionally, RNZ’s crime correspondent Sam Sherwood received the award for best specialist reporting for his impactful work at Stuff last year.
In the category of best current affairs (long) or documentary, Lisa Taouma was honored for her work on “Myths & Maidens,” a thought-provoking documentary about female identity in Pasifika society. The documentary was praised for its originality, creative storytelling, and its contribution to important cultural discussions. RNZ’s Kate Newton and Hingyi Khong were finalists in the best innovation in digital storytelling category for their project “Smoke Signals,” while the team behind “Uncut Diamond” was also recognized for their original podcast or series. Additionally, Mihingarangi Forbes was a finalist for her scoop on the mother of missing Marokopa children and received a nomination for the Te Tohu Kairangi award.
RNZ and Coconet TV’s collaborative work on “Untold Pacific History – Season 2” and “The Last Voyage of the Rainbow Warrior” earned them a spot as finalists for the Le Mana Pacific award. RNZ itself was acknowledged as a finalist for the digital news provider of the year and for their coverage of the sinking of HMNZS Manawanui in the best coverage of a major news event category. Guyon Espiner and John Hartevelt from RNZ were also finalists in the political journalist of the year and editorial leader of the year categories, respectively.
