Moeapulu Frances Tagaloa Recognized for Survivor Advocacy

Moeapulu Frances Tagaloa, a member of the Royal Commission’s Survivor Advisory Group of Experts, has been awarded the prestigious title of Companion of the King’s Service Order for her dedicated services to survivors of abuse in care. This recognition comes as a tribute to her unwavering strength and resilience in the face of adversity.

Surprise and Gratitude

In an interview with RNZ Pacific, Tagaloa expressed her surprise at receiving this honour, attributing her success to her faith and personal relationship with God. She emphasized the role of faith in her healing journey from faith-based abuse by a Catholic Marist Brother, highlighting the importance of justice in her advocacy work. Tagaloa also took a moment to thank her husband and family for their unwavering support throughout her advocacy efforts.

Shining a Light on Atrocities

Tagaloa, along with other survivors, bravely shared their stories with the Royal Commission to shed light on the horrific atrocities endured in state and faith-based care facilities. Despite the global attention their stories received, Tagaloa emphasized that this remains a national shame that demands accountability and systemic change to ensure the safety of children and vulnerable adults in care.

A Call for Transformational Change

Accepting the honour on behalf of all survivors, Tagaloa underscored the urgent need for a system of redress and emphasized the importance of survivors coming forward to share their experiences. She highlighted the profound impact of community support in the healing process, noting that while their shared experiences bonded them, their ultimate goal is to protect future generations from similar trauma.

As Tagaloa’s story exemplifies, resilience and advocacy can spark transformative change and pave the way for a brighter future for survivors of abuse in care. Her journey serves as a beacon of hope and empowerment for all those who have faced similar challenges, inspiring them to speak out, seek justice, and stand united in solidarity against abuse and injustice.
