Drug Testing and Safety Measures at Rhythm and Vines Festival: What You Need to Know

The Rhythm and Vines festival in Gisborne kicked off with a bang as people flocked to have their substances tested on the first day. Drug Foundation spokesperson Hayden Eastmond-Mein revealed that their drug checkers are already at full capacity, with a limited number of spectrometer testing devices available that need to be shared with other New Year’s festivals. Last year, approximately 1000 samples were tested at the festival, and this year is expected to be just as busy with over 26,000 attendees anticipated.

Testing Amidst the Crowds

Eastmond-Mein expressed excitement about the high demand for testing, stating, “We’ve been really busy at [Rhythm and Vines], which is awesome. Our team is testing right throughout the festival, seeing a lot of people and working tirelessly to ensure safety.” With a dedicated team of 12, they will be conducting tests until 5 pm each day to accommodate the festival-goers.

Braving the Elements

Despite facing record rainfall and high winds on Boxing Day, over 17,000 campers checked in for the festival’s first day. Rhythm and Vines’ head of marketing, Kyle Bell, shared that campers were asked to delay their arrival to allow the ground to dry up after the heavy rain. Thanks to the weather conditions, the soggy ground dried up, providing a sturdy base for campers to pitch their tents later in the day. Bell reassured attendees that the weather is looking promising for the remaining days of the festival.

Looking Ahead

As the festival continues, attendees can expect a seamless experience with ongoing drug testing services and improved weather conditions. Despite the initial challenges posed by the weather, the collective spirit of festival-goers remains high, ensuring a memorable and safe event for all.
