Coromandel Wildfire Continues to Grow

The scrub fire on the eastern Coromandel peninsula near Kūaotunu has escalated in size overnight, prompting an ongoing response from Fire and Emergency crews. The fire, which broke out on Saturday, has now expanded to approximately 600 metres by 600 metres, up from its initial size of 300 metres by 600 metres.

Challenges Faced by Firefighters

According to Shane Bromley, Fire and Emergency’s Assistant Commander for Waikato, the fire has presented challenges due to the rugged terrain it is located in. The blaze is situated up a cliff face in an area with fallen old pines and regrowth, making it difficult for ground crews to access. Despite the tough conditions, three helicopters and two ground crews are actively engaged in combating the fire.

Efforts to Control the Fire

Bromley reassured the public that the fire is currently under control, with no immediate threat to people or property. While two properties are in proximity to the fire, they are considered safe at this time. Crews from Kūaotunu, Whangapoua, and Coromandel, totaling about 40 staff, are working diligently to contain the fire by the end of Sunday, although complete extinguishment may take a few days due to the challenging landscape.

Community Safety Measures

In light of the situation, authorities have closed Black Jack Road for the day, implementing stop-go traffic management to allow residents access to their homes. Despite the absence of evacuation orders, officials urge individuals to avoid the area if not necessary. The cause of the fire remains unknown, emphasizing the importance of caution and vigilance in fire-prone regions.
