Coromandel Police Conduct 900 Breath Tests in a Single Day
Coromandel police were hard at work yesterday, conducting a whopping 900 alcohol breath tests across 28 checkpoints as part of a holiday crackdown on drink driving. This intensive effort led to the processing of five drivers for excess breath alcohol, highlighting the ongoing importance of road safety measures in our communities.
Dedicated road policing teams, led by Inspector Mike Henwood, area commander for the Eastern Waikato, were instrumental in carrying out these crucial tests. Inspector Henwood emphasized the significance of their collective efforts, stating, “Yesterday’s hard work and high number of checks are a credit to our dedicated road policing teams. We work tirelessly alongside our road safety partners to prevent deaths and serious injuries on our roads.”
Highlighting the alarming reality of the situation, Inspector Henwood added, “We caught five intoxicated drivers yesterday, and that’s five too many.” This sobering reminder underscores the critical need for continued vigilance and enforcement to keep our roads safe for all users.
Urging Responsible Driving Habits
In light of these recent developments, the police are urging all drivers to prioritize safety on the roads. Inspector Henwood stressed the importance of ensuring that everyone in the vehicle is wearing the correct seat belts, avoiding distractions such as mobile phones, refraining from speeding, and adjusting driving behavior according to the prevailing conditions.
As we approach the holiday season and New Year festivities, it is crucial for both locals and holidaymakers to be aware of the increased likelihood of breath testing operations taking place at any time and in any location. This proactive approach aims to deter drink driving and promote responsible behavior behind the wheel, ultimately saving lives and preventing unnecessary tragedies on our roads. Let’s all do our part to contribute to safer roads for everyone.
Remember, safety is everyone’s responsibility. Drive sober, stay focused, and arrive safely at your destination.
