Desert Road Maintenance: What You Need to Know

The Desert Road between Tūrangi and Waiouru is set to undergo extensive maintenance for a period of two months, starting from Monday. This closure is necessary for crucial reconstruction work spanning 16 kilometers of road, drainage improvements, and the replacement of the deck of the Mangatoetoenui Bridge. Roger Brady, the regional manager of maintenance and operations in Waikato-Bay of Plenty, highlighted the significance of this maintenance work in enhancing the longevity and safety of the bridge.

Bridge Deck Replacement for Longevity

The Mangatoetoenui Bridge, constructed in 1966, is in dire need of a new deck to ensure its structural integrity for the next 50 years. The new deck, designed and built in Napier, consists of steel girders and a concrete slab. This replacement process involves transporting the deck in two sections and then assembling it on-site. Once completed, the bridge is expected to withstand the test of time for decades to come.

Weather Considerations and Detours

As maintenance work progresses, ground temperatures above 13 degrees are essential for the construction to proceed smoothly. With the onset of decreasing temperatures and the possibility of ground frosts from March onwards, the timing of the closure becomes critical. A detour plan has been put in place for travelers, guiding them through alternative routes via SH41, SH47, SH4, SH49, and back to SH1 in Waiouru. While this detour may add an additional 30 to 40 minutes to the journey, it is necessary to ensure the safety of all road users.
