Blaze at Piha RSA: Firefighters Save Main Building in West Auckland
A fire broke out at the Piha RSA in West Auckland, causing devastation to a small smokers hut next to the main building. The incident occurred late on Thursday night, prompting a swift response from firefighters to prevent the flames from spreading further. Despite the loss of the smokers hut, the main building was successfully saved, thanks to the rapid actions of local volunteers and Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) crews.
RSA Grateful for Quick Response
Graham Gibson, the RSA Auckland district president, expressed gratitude towards the firefighters for their efforts in containing the fire. Initially fearing that the entire building was consumed by the flames, Gibson was relieved to see that the main structure remained intact. He commended the Piha RSA leadership for their quick response, emphasizing that their prompt actions played a crucial role in preventing further damage.
Community Hub Saved
The Piha RSA, known as a social hub for the local community and visitors, suffered a “devastating fire” that destroyed the outside area adjacent to the main building. However, the quick arrival of the Piha crew and other responding units helped contain the blaze and protect the RSA building from extensive damage. Despite the impact on the smokers hut, the main structure remains standing.
Quick Response Prevents Further Damage
According to Fire and Emergency spokespersons, multiple reports of a building on fire were received just before midnight, prompting a rapid deployment of resources to the scene. Local volunteers arrived within minutes, followed by five fire trucks, a ladder truck, support vehicles, and a command unit to combat the flames. The fire was successfully extinguished, with the last crew leaving the site around 3.30 am on Friday.
Investigation Underway
Piha Campground kaitiaki Fiona Anderson reported that the fire likely originated in the RSA’s smoking room, located across the river from the campsite. Observers noticed an unusual glow emanating from the smoking room before midnight, prompting a call to the fire brigade. Despite the late hour, the quick response of emergency services helped contain the fire and prevent further escalation. Fire investigators are expected to assess the site today to determine the cause of the blaze.
As we reflect on this incident, let us appreciate the bravery and dedication of the firefighters, volunteers, and emergency responders who worked tirelessly to contain the fire and protect the Piha RSA. Their swift actions undoubtedly saved the main building, preserving a vital community space for future generations. Let’s take a moment to express our gratitude for their unwavering commitment to keeping our communities safe.
