So, like, Sarah Billings, right? Yeah, she totally came in second place in the women’s 800 metres at that fancy Shanghai Diamond League meet. Her time was 1:57.83, which was just 0.05 seconds off the Australian record. Impressive stuff, if you ask me.
And get this, Nicola Olyslagers and Eleanor Patterson also did pretty well in the women’s high jump. They snagged second and third place behind Ukraine’s Yaroslava Mahuchikh, who’s apparently an Olympic champion and a world record holder. Olyslagers cleared 1.98m, while Patterson managed 1.95m. Mahuchikh, though, jumped a cool 2.00m to take the top spot.
Billings, who recently placed third in the 1,000m at the Xiamen leg of the Diamond League circuit, seems to be on fire. She was all pumped after her second-place finish in the 800m. Clocking a personal best time of 1:57.83, she was hot on the heels of Ethiopian winner Tsige Duguma, who finished in 1:56.64. Billings was just a hair’s breadth away from Catriona Bisset’s national record of 1:57.78, set six years ago in London.
“I couldn’t be happier,” Billings said post-race. “I’ve been picked for the world championships in the 1,500m, so that’s still the main goal. But that was pretty close to the national record, so I’m really happy.”
But hey, Billings wasn’t the only Aussie shining bright that day. Olyslagers and Patterson also made their mark, standing proud on the podium in the women’s high jump. It was a fierce battle, with Mahuchikh reigning supreme at 2.00m. Olyslagers cleared 1.98m like a pro, leaving Patterson behind at 1.95m.
Oh, and did I mention Sweden’s Armand Duplantis? Yeah, that dude soared to victory in the men’s pole vault, reaching an impressive height of 6.11m. Meanwhile, our Aussie mate Kurtis Marschall managed a respectable 5.72m, earning himself a solid fourth place.
All in all, it was a day of triumphs and near misses at the Shanghai Diamond League meet. And who knows, maybe next time, Sarah Billings will smash that Australian record out of the park. Keep an eye out for these Aussie athletes making waves on the world stage!
