Festival Safety: ‘Fatigue Stops’ for Safe Passage Home

Whakatāne District Council’s community safety adviser, Richard Hamer, is on a mission to ensure the safety of weary drivers returning home from the Rhythm and Vines music festival in Gisborne. This New Year’s Day, Hamer is spearheading a crucial initiative involving volunteers managing two fatigue stops in Matatā and Ōpōtiki to prevent accidents caused by exhausted drivers.

Double the Effort, Double the Impact

The Matatā fatigue stop, a long-standing tradition, has provided respite for over 1000 drivers in the past. This year, in a bid to enhance safety measures, a second fatigue stop will be established in Ōpōtiki. Councillor Gavin Dennis, alongside the Matatā Volunteer Fire Brigade and Blue Light, has collaborated to organize the fatigue stop in Ōpōtiki to ensure drivers have a safe place to rest and rejuvenate.

Navigating Budget Cuts for Road Safety

Despite facing a 60% budget cut in road safety funding, Hamer remains committed to prioritizing critical areas of concern, such as alcohol, speed, and seatbelt usage. With reduced financial resources, innovative cost-saving measures have been implemented, including partnering with local organizations like Waiotahi Contractors to manage traffic in Ōpōtiki and optimizing existing infrastructure like rumble strips in Matatā to ensure driver safety.

Empowering the Community for Safer Roads

Amidst budget constraints, Hamer and his team are not only focusing on fatigue stops but are also launching the Road Safety Summer Roadshow in January. By engaging the community through interactive activities and offering spot prizes, the initiative aims to promote road safety awareness and encourage responsible driving behaviors across various Eastern Bay locations.

As we navigate the road to safety this festive season, let’s remember the importance of rest, responsible driving, and community collaboration in ensuring a safe journey home for all. Stay vigilant, stay safe, and let’s make every road trip a memorable and secure experience for everyone on the road.

Remember, safety is a shared responsibility – let’s drive home this message together!
