Community Unites for Shared Christmas Meals Amid Growing Need

As Christmas Day unfolds, hundreds of people are coming together at City Missions in Auckland and Wellington to share a massive holiday feast. The festive spirit is in full swing, but beneath the joyous atmosphere lies a stark reality – the level of need in these communities has reached an all-time high this year.

Auckland City Mission Rallies Volunteers to Serve 500 People

At the Auckland City Mission, chief executive Helen Robinson is overseeing the feeding of around 500 individuals from the mission’s Auckland headquarters. In addition, the mission has distributed a staggering 7000 Christmas food parcels and 30,000 presents over the past two weeks. Despite the tireless efforts of numerous volunteers, including those present on Christmas Day, the mission is straining under the weight of demand.

Robinson acknowledges that this year’s need is unparalleled, with resources stretched to their limits. A recent health study revealed that one in four New Zealand children’s families lack sufficient funds for food, highlighting the severity of the situation. Robinson’s team has been tirelessly providing meals for 400-500 people daily at the HomeGround community space, emphasizing the urgency of addressing the growing crisis.

Wellington City Mission Faces Unprecedented Demand Amid Economic Struggles

Meanwhile, in Wellington, Missioner Murray Edridge is grappling with unprecedented demand for the mission’s services this Christmas. Approximately 200 guests, including visitors and residents of the Whakamaru transitional housing facility, are gathering to enjoy a lavish meal featuring ham, turkey, vegetables, and festive treats.

Edridge laments the harsh economic realities facing many individuals this year, exacerbated by a cost of living crisis. The mission has extended its operating hours and services to meet the surge in demand, reflecting the urgent need for support. As the city mission commemorates its 120th anniversary, Edridge reflects on the enduring struggle to alleviate poverty and hardship in the community.

Volunteers Bring Joy and Agency to Christmas Celebrations

Amid the challenges, volunteers at both City Missions are bringing joy and warmth to those in need this holiday season. In Auckland, a new approach to the Christmas lunch, featuring pop-up food stations offering fish and chips, noodles, spring rolls, and ice cream, has delighted guests and volunteers alike. The shift towards a buffet-style meal has empowered individuals to choose their favorites and enjoy a festive feast with dignity.

One dedicated volunteer, with five years of service under their belt, expressed delight at the positive atmosphere and the opportunity to serve delicious treats to the community. The City Mission’s community kitchen lead, Raymond Salakaia, praised the new approach for giving guests a sense of agency and ensuring a smooth and enjoyable morning.

As Christmas unfolds, the spirit of generosity and compassion shines brightly at the City Missions in Auckland and Wellington, reminding us of the power of community solidarity in times of need.
