Gang Member Sentenced for Involvement in Violent Shootout

A gang member from the Killer Beez gang, Joshua Baker, has been sentenced to jail for his role in a violent feud that resulted in multiple incidents involving firearms in East Auckland. Baker recently appeared in the Auckland High Court before Justice Mathew Downs for sentencing.

Violent Feud Escalates

The sentencing notes from Justice Downs highlighted that Baker’s actions were part of the ongoing “intergang hostility” between the Tribesmen and Killer Beez gangs from May to June 2022. During this period, there were over 20 shootings and nine arsons carried out by the two gangs.

Details of the Shootout

On May 24, around 6:50 pm, Baker, along with three others, drove to the home of a Tribesman member in Glen Osborne Terrace, Flat Bush. Armed with a 20-gauge shotgun, a 12-gauge shotgun, and another firearm, Baker’s group fired at least eight shots towards the home, hitting a car and causing damage to the property. The occupants of the home returned fire, resulting in bullet damage to nearby properties and cars.

Second Incident

Later that same night, Baker and two others went to a home in Henderson, West Auckland, in a stolen vehicle. Armed with at least two firearms, they fired shots towards the home, narrowly missing the female occupant’s head. The judge emphasized that the incident was gang-related, premeditated, and posed a high risk of serious harm to the occupants or neighbors.

A Message from the Judge

Justice Downs directly addressed Baker, reminding him of the potential consequences of his actions. He urged Baker to consider the safety of his own family and loved ones, emphasizing the gravity of the situation. Baker was sentenced to four and a half years in prison for his involvement in the violent feud.

As we reflect on this case, it serves as a sobering reminder of the destructive impact of gang violence on communities and families. It highlights the importance of addressing the root causes of such conflicts and finding ways to prevent further harm. Let’s strive to create a safer and more peaceful environment for everyone, free from the threat of violence and fear.
