International Ketamine Supply Ring Dismantled
An international drug ring accused of trafficking ketamine into Australia has been dismantled in Europe with the help of the Australian Federal Police. The operation uncovered a sophisticated network smuggling drugs disguised in Christmas toys and household items from Spain into Australia, leading to the arrest of eleven individuals involved in the illicit trade.

The Australian Federal Police collaborated with Guardia Civil and Catalonian Police in Europe to execute search warrants across nine properties in Spain, including in Barcelona and Ibiza. This joint effort resulted in the apprehension of the alleged senior members of the drug syndicate responsible for trafficking ketamine and other illicit substances into Australia.
Discovery at Perth Airport
The investigation was triggered when AFP and Australian Border Force officers discovered 1.5kg of ketamine concealed within Christmas toys at Perth Airport on Christmas Day in 2023. This alarming find prompted a deeper probe into the international drug smuggling operation and led to the subsequent unraveling of the criminal syndicate’s activities.
Breakthrough in the Case
Detectives made a significant breakthrough in the case when they uncovered encrypted messages on a mobile phone seized during the investigation. These messages allegedly revealed correspondence between the suspects, including a 39-year-old Italian national based in Spain, who played a key role in coordinating the drug shipments to Australia.
Consignments Linked to Arrested Individuals
Further investigations following the discovery of the encrypted messages led detectives to intercept eight air mail consignments containing an additional 15kg of ketamine. Authorities believe they have gathered substantial evidence linking these drug shipments to the 39-year-old Italian national and the other individuals charged in connection with the illicit drug trade.
