rebuilding-christchurch-community-pool-18-year-campaign-success

The Christchurch community is set to rejoice as plans for a new community pool in the suburb of St Albans have finally come to fruition after an 18-year campaign. The previous pool, the 70-year-old Edgeware Pool, was demolished in 2007, sparking passionate opposition from the local residents. Now, thanks to the unwavering dedication of the St Albans Pavilion and Pool Incorporated, the dream of a new pool is becoming a reality.

The Chair of the group, Lynne O’Keefe, expressed her joy at reaching this milestone after years of persistence. She emphasized the crucial role played by the small group in keeping the rebuild alive, while also acknowledging the growing support from the community. O’Keefe highlighted the invaluable contribution of tradespeople who have shown unwavering support for the project.

With a building consent already lodged at the end of 2024, construction is poised to begin in the coming months. The $3 million facility is expected to provide a much-needed space for local children to enhance their swimming skills. O’Keefe stressed the importance of easy access to water for children to build confidence, especially for those who may not have regular opportunities to swim.

The new facility will boast a 25-meter pool, a learners pool, and a manu pool, catering to a diverse range of swimmers. This long-awaited project promises to not only provide a recreational space for the community but also serve as a hub for learning and skill development.

Community Persistence Pays Off

The success of the St Albans Pavilion and Pool Incorporated serves as a testament to the power of community persistence. Despite facing numerous challenges over the years, the group remained steadfast in their mission to rebuild the pool, demonstrating the impact of collective action in bringing about positive change.

Enhancing Water Safety

The new community pool is not just a recreational facility but a vital resource for enhancing water safety among local children. With easy access to swimming facilities, children will have the opportunity to develop essential swimming skills, fostering confidence and ensuring their safety around water.

Looking Towards a Brighter Future

As construction commences on the new pool, the residents of St Albans can look forward to a brighter future filled with opportunities for recreation, learning, and community engagement. The pool will not only be a physical space but a symbol of resilience and unity within the neighborhood, reflecting the unwavering spirit of the community.
